Wilcox over Allen

IRVING Rookie safety J.J. Wilcox will get his first NFL start Sunday against St. Louis in place of veteran Will Allen, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Friday evening on KRLD-FM 105.3.

Wilcox has received a lot of the first-team repetitions the last two days in practice in place of Allen, who started the first two games.

Wilcox, the third-round pick out of Georgia Southern, only played safety his last season in college. Wilcox showed promise in training camp, though he missed about two weeks after his mother died in Georgia.

The Cowboys made Allen, who is in his 10th season, one of their two off-season free agent signings. He struggled at times in pass coverage the first two games.

Wilcox was asked Friday about his increased role this week.

What, on special teams? he said, smiling.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Friday that Wilcox has improved a great deal since training camp. Wilcox said hes learned a lot from Allen.

Hes probably been the best mentor Ive had, Wilcox said. He took me under his wings, no hesitation. Hes a great, wonderful person.

BRIEFLY

A big topic this week has been the Cowboys slow start in the running game and their lack of commitment to the run. At the forefront of the discussion has been starting back DeMarco Murray, who had only 12 carries for 25 yards Sunday against Kansas City. But Murray said Friday hes not worried about the lack of touches. Im definitely not frustrated, Murray said. Im fine. Im fine. DE DeMarcus Ware was limited in practice all week after suffering a neck stinger Sunday against Kansas City but will play against St. Louis on Sunday. Starting CB Morris Claiborne, who was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday while managing his dislocated left shoulder injury, fully participated in practice Friday and is expected to play against the Rams. LB Ernie Sims has been ruled out for Sundays game against St. Louis. He also didnt play last week at Kansas City because of a groin injury.

This year we aren't waiting on injuries, its musical players, I guess the coaches learned nothing in camp about who to start.

If we win, I don't care right now who they start, but I sure don't get this different people every week thing?

Where's Randle, when does he get to start?

The team has not been happy with Allen. He has missed several assignments and been out of position too..

More of a demotion than a promotion..

IMO

I know they were pissed at him last game for dropping that pick 6. Other than that I haven't really paid that much attention to him. But I haven't found a specifics for him being replaced.

Will Allen has always been a backup and he is showing us why. Time to get the new kid in there and take our lumps for a few games until he gets up to speed.

Good draft indeed.. Wilcox, Escobar, Williams and Fredricks all contributed in the game..So much for naysaying media who graded the draft from D to C+...lproving again how little they know..

Wilcox was robbed of an INT..and Barry Church looks like some guy named Williams playing safety..Good lordy that guy can hit

You are a dog lmao...you know how much I loved Roy Williams, but the media didn't, Barry hitting like Roy...that will never happen...but I told you the guy is a Playa....lol

I said he was hitting like Roy..not he is as good as Roy..

Kiffin and Maranelli have those guys flying to the ball and hitting anything that moves.

George Selvie and Jason Hatcher have been beasts..Been a while since we have seen a defense like this...even if it is for only three weeks

The secondary coach said "The one thing about Wilcox that worries me is, he may kill somebody" he was of course talking about how hard he hits. I hope he puts the smack down on those Denver wussy WRers when we play them.

Hardest hitting pair of safeties the team has had since Woodson and Williams..

Now before anyone goes there? I am not saying these two kids are the level of those two guys, but they have the potential to be really good.

cheers

Well I love these guys....I watched the Cowboys all my life, and Cliff harris and Roy Williams gave up their bodies to be the baddest ever.

I would pick Cornell Green over Woodson in a heartbeat.

I hope the kids we have become legend....as well as the rest of the team.

I came back to this, when we talk about Cowboys who should be in the hall of fame, there are a few who are not and its a black mark on the Hall.

The 2 most obvious are Cliff Harris and Drew Pearson...shame shame on the Hall of Fame.

But then why not Too Tall, oh hell I'm not going to make a long list. But Cornell Green will never be considered. He doesn't hold the records.

He doesn't hold the records, because Tom Landry switched a great CB to FS. Where he played until he retired from the game.

The thing that makes him most qualified to be a hall of famer....playing 2 positions at a high level, is the thing that keeps him out of the Hall...a crying shame.

Only two 'all decade' members not in the HOF
