Who Will the Cowboys Pick At Numer 16?

We're (4) Days away from "With the sixteenth pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys select?"

Here is what I think will happen?

I believe the Cowboys will draft a pass rusher with their first pick. With their (30) visits the league allows from prospective draftees, the team brought in (4) First Round Grade Defensive Linemen. I believe one of them will be their first round pick?

Timmy Jernigan – DT – FSU
Aaron Donald – DT Pittsburgh
Anthony Barr – LB – UCLA (Cowboys see him as DE)
Kony Ealy – DE – Mizzou

If they decide to trade down, I see the following players as options.

Demarcus Lawrence – DE – Boise State
Dominique Easley – DT – Florida
Jimmie Ward – S – N. Illinois

Looking at mock drafts we see:

CBS Sports - Timmy Jernigan – DT – FSU
NFL.Com(Consensus 3 of 4 picked) - Anthony Barr – LB – UCLA (4th picked Jernigan)
WalterFootball.com - Aaron Donald – DT Pittsburgh
Sports Illustrated - Ra’Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota
Ourlads.com -Aaron Donald – DT Pittsburgh

The Cowboys selection will be hampered by two teams picking above them. The Bears and The Giants picking at 14 and 12 are both favored to select pass rushers as well. Although the Giants are rumored to be looking at offensive line help and are rumored to like Zack Martin OT/OG Notre Dame.

The Bears are also looking at more of an outside pass rusher so they may look at a DE.

Putting those two bits of information about Chicago and New York with the guys Dallas brought in, I believe with their First Round Selection, number 16 overall, and if they don't trade down, I see them taking:

Anthony Barr LB/DE UCLA
Hawk

Barr is nothing but a project, he's a 3-4 guy (OLB) who has never played 4-3 (DE). So we would have Spencer (if healthy)another guy who has never shown he can play 4-3.

We will trade down and pickup the 1 tech Jernigan who can start for us. With Selvie and Melton next to him we are in good shape to start the season. We have Crawford, and Ben Bass people seem to forget this.

This defense has some players, why is it people can't remember, all the injuries from last year.

I'm happy Barr will be gone when we pick, he's not the guy we need to start immediately. Plus he's not very strong, check his stats at the combine.

By the way I'd be happy with this guy also Ra’Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota
LoneStar

I think we have discussed this under the Cowboys draft. But Donald will be gone long before we pick. I do like his motor, he never stops, but I also think he's to small for an every down player.

Barr, oh PLS don't let us get another project guy. But he to will be gone, after that its just a crap shoot. See draft contest for what I really think.

Let me also be the first to admit, I had barr as my first choice at one time, then I realized it was all a media hype. But what the hell, I've been wrong before.

Barr is 6'5, 255 pounds and ran a 4.56/40 at the combine. His low time was 4.41. He played OLB at UCLA but I read where the team thinks he can be a efective pass rusher at DE.

but..I nearly went with Jernigan from FSU.

Trading down is a likely outcome if three of the DE/DT are still there..but they need to get a premium defensive lineman.
Desperado

I Picked Barr in the draft contest. But with all the press he's getting now, I'm sure he'll be gone when we pick.

I do believe he only had 15 reps on the 225 bench press. Not good when your pass rusher doesn't have upper body strength. Playing from the down position (DE) is a world of difference from the OLB position.
El Kabong

Strengths Exceptional take-off speed, acceleration and closing burst. Makes plays effortlessly in back-side lateral pursuit. Outstanding recovery quickness to make plays (when he is out of position). Explosive striker. Can produce "wow" plays when he triggers quickly or releases cleanly and has developed a reputation for knocking quarterbacks out of games (see USC, 2012 and New Mexico State, 2013).

Weaknesses Developing instincts -- late to locate the ball and too easily fooled by play-action and misdirection. Motor runs hot and cold -- does not always apply himself. Can be locked down too easily when engaged -- unrefined hand use. Lacks variety of pass-rush moves and relies too much on natural speed. Average eyes, anticipation and awareness in coverage — marginal feel. Average base strength -- moved off the ball too easily by tight ends (plays tall). Needs more time in the weight room -- 15 bench-press reps were tied for the fewest among linebackers at the combine.

Draft Projection Round 1 (top 10)

Bottom Line A highly disruptive, athletic specimen with the pass-rush potential to effortlessly emerge as a double-digit sack producer. Is far from a finished product and his best football is still ahead of him, yet he plays the game with more of an offensive temperament and could require some patience. Is the type of rare athlete that could even contribute as an offensive playmaker once he learns to grasp defensive concepts and the game slows down for him.

I don't think you can convert him to 4-3 , his skill set is 3-4. I think he'd be a bust in a 4-3 defense, at the very least he can't come in and be a starter.

We need an immediate starter

I have Jernigan as my guy in the 1st. But lets be honest here, do you really use your 1st round pick on a 1tech. Sure we can plug him right in, but really what you want in the 1st is a guy with some élite skill.

I would not look for a 1tech until 4th or 5th round. I started out months ago wanting a S, now I'm back there again.

I really hope we grab Pryor with our first pick.

Hearing a lot of chatter.

One..Everyone thinks Barr will be gone in top 10.

Two..Some predicting the Cowboys move up to 13 and take Donald before the Bears get a chance at 14.

Others saying the team may trade down to late in the first and take a Safety or DL, then with the second they pick up take whichever they didn't take with first pick..

Cowboys seem to think they can and Dwight Freny did pretty well as an undersized rusher in the 4-3 Tampa defense.

Latest rumor today, Jernigan failed his drug test at the combine

Hadn't heard that, but if someone is dumb enough to do drugs before the combine, well you know the rest..
LoneStar

Per @JayGlazer, Mettenberger, Jernigan, Telvin Smith, Christian Jones, Anthony Johnson and Seantrel Henderson failed drug tests at combine.

Worth noting for Jernigan, it was declared a failed drug test at first, but now its being reported as a diluted sample.
Desperado

I say sign him if we get the chance
BevoMav

Word I read is he has dropped from first to second round by the failed drug test..

I have read severaly reports, one from Mike Fisher, that they are considering trading down. Possible trading partners could even be the Eagles.
Hawk

I think we will trade down, the people we want can be had later on. But this is what I got yesterday.

Cowboys aren't hearing much about setting up pre-draft trade arrangements this year, Jones says

Last year, the Cowboys worked a first-round trade with the San Francisco 49ers that may or may not have been arranged in advance of the draft.

This year, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it has been quiet on the phones. Nobody is really calling, and the Cowboys aren't chasing, he said Tuesday at Valley Ranch at the team’s annual pre-draft press conference.

“Those opportunities, you don’t usually create them or set them up,” he said. “You can use your logic; you can say this club may be a candidate for a trade if that’s what you want to think about at that particular time.

“Now, do we go through the gyrations of trades and go through the possibilities of the phone ringing and us picking the phone up? Of course we do. You look and try to be as ready as you can if that should happen. But in general, we haven’t been talking to anybody about trades.”

The Cowboys hold the 16th pick in the first round. The draft begins at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“It usually is a clock- or day-of-draft-type of dynamic,” Jones said. “But I would be surprised if there would not be trade opportunities by the time you get to where we’re going to be picking, or certainly after.”

Latest noise from Valley Ranch, and reported by Mike Fisher.

Dallas has Donald and Barr as their 1 and 1A picks. If neither is there, they will consider Zack Martin, OT to pair with Smith.

Mike Lombardi chimed in and said he is the next highest ranked player and the Cowboys think there are a lot of DLine left to pick at second or even third round.
LoneStar

Fisher could be right, I see a lot of guys today predicting Martin. (none of us did)

Bevo there's a message for you at draft contest.

The Ranch, one of the worst run forums on the internet actually did a thread about Mike. Half of them really ripped on him, unbelievable.

I 've known him a few years now 4-5 and he's always been factual and has never been rude to me when we have had conversations.

He more than anybody seems to have the real scoop the majority of the time.
BevoMav

The thing about Fish is he doesn't make stuff up. He writes what he hears.

I just tweeted him and he said the Cowboys are holding their breath for Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Boise St.

I can't remember if I posted my thoughts? So if I did, here they are again.

I like:
#47- Give me Louis Nix DT from ND
#78 give me Terrance Brooks S..He ran a 4.37/40 at the Combine..
