What the Cowboys Should Do This Offseason (Cap relief)

The Cowboys cap situation is, again, a mess, but like last year, they will play with the numbers and make it work. In a three part series, we will look at the Salary Cap situation, what to do in Free Agency and finally the draft.

First the Salary Cap Situation:

According to Clarence Williams of the Star Telegram the Cowboys are $22 million over the cap. This includes $11.8 million in dead money. That sounds like a lot but they can get under the cap relatively easily.

First let's look at moves the team can make.

Tony Romo's contract will be restructured. By converting his 2014 salary to a signing bonus, his cap hit will drop by $11.73 million. The big issue is by doing this Romo's cap hit in 2015 is $25 million. It's obvious the Cowboys intend to run out the clock on Tony's contract. My guess is in three years, he will be released.

DeMarcus counts $16 million against the cap. That's because they have redone his contract for three years in a row. Ware only had 9 sacks in 2013 and if they cut him, the save an additional $7.5 million against the cap. Ware's agent said he believes the team will let Ware check the market and see what's out there.

Miles Austin, if cut on June 1 would save $5 million but together with Ware, the team would have $13.5 million in dead money in 2015. In 2014 the team has roughly $11.8 dead money. Ratliff leads with $6.9 million and Nate Livings, Marcus Spears, Sean Lissemore and David Arkin make up the balance.

Running backs are the best value on the team. Murry only counts $946K against the cap. Add Dunbar and Randle and you are only at $2.6 million or 1.6% of cap space.

One of the big questions is what to do with Jason Witten. He counts $8.41 million against the cap and if they cut him, they save nearly $8 million with only $236K in dead money. I make Witten take a pay cut, to say $5 million or cut him. Not a popular move but they drafted Escobar for a reason.

Defensive line, once Ware's contract is settled, will be an advantage. They have a couple of spare DLinemen who they can cut and save $1.38 million. I see no way to keep Hatcher, especially he has run his head and done a J Ratliff move. I fully expect him to rag the Boys on the way out of town, but he will be 32 by the season starts and how much does he have left. Let him get his money somewhere else.

Only one move makes sense for the Linebacker corp. Justin Durant will be released to a savings of $1.25 million. Lee at $7.5 million is the only one making any money. Which is good because if he is healthy, he is the only one worth keeping. Carter counts only $1.5 million against the cap so even though he way underachieved, he will stay.

Cornerback is the worst position related to the Salary Cap. Too many making too much money and nothing to be gained by releasing any of them. They total $24.51 million against the cap and only QB at $26 million is more. A lot of people talk about the defensive line mistakes with Ratliff and Spencer but Clairborne, Carr and Scandrick make a combined $22 million, and there is nothing to be done about it.

Safety is a very weak position for the Cowboys, but the good news is, they don't pay a lot to any of them. Church is the only one making over a million at $1.5 million.

To sum it up, if the Cowboys:

Restructure Romo(11.73 million)
Release or get Ware to take a cut(7.5 million)
Cut Miles Austin(5 million)
Get Witten to take a cut(5 million)
Cut the two DLinemen(1.38 million)
Release Justin Durant(1.25 million)

The saving here alone will save them $31.86 million against the cap. That would put them nearly $10 million under the cap.

Cuts I see coming

Costa

Heath

Clutts

Randle

Maybe Claiborne

Cook

Cowboys can't cut Clairborne. He would cost way too much of a cap hit. So we are stuck him.

I'm a little confused here, isn't Claiborne on a rookie contract, not talking about Carr. Plus you lose your *** by cutting Austin and or Ware. Nobody seems to care about that!

Claiborne signed a 16 mil deal, and 10 mil was guaranteed, already paid, he can be cut tomorrow, no big deal. I would hope we trade him and get something besides a comp pick next year.

But I would also hope he becomes what we hoped he would when we drafted him.

Typical Cowboy BS sign a guy for 50mil, draft a guy #1 and both guys are man to man coverage.
Then what do we do, we put them in zone coverage hope they fix that this season.

We will never know how good these guys are until we fix the DL. Fix the DL and we may have some all pro's in the secondary.

Lee, Scandrick Give Cowboys Needed Salary-Cap Relief - Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com
The Cowboys created nearly $7.8 million in cap space when they restructured the contracts of Sean Lee and Orlando Scandrick. Both contracts were designed from the start to allow restructuring this year. The same provisions are built into Tony Romo's new contract, and his restructure will yield another $10 million.

Dallas Cowboys restructuring contracts of Tony Romo, Sean Lee to near salary cap - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
The Cowboys will be less than $1 million over the salary cap after restructuring Tony Romo early this morning, Todd Archer writes.

According to a source, the Cowboys will rework Romo's contract to create $10 million in salary cap space. The Cowboys will convert $12.5 million of Romo's $13.5 million base salary into a signing bonus, dropping his salary-cap figure from $21.773 million to $11.773 million
