Smith signs new deal

When the Dallas Cowboys have signed some of their own players to long-term deals, one of the prevailing themes is that those deals make them Cowboys for life.

That wasn't the case for Terence Newman. That wasn't the case for DeMarcus Ware. That might not be the case for Tony Romo and/or Jason Witten depending on how the next few years go.

The "Cowboy for life," thought is a good one. At the time those deals have been completed, I don't doubt that the thought for both player and team is he will wear a star on the side of his helmet until he's done playing.

For Tyron Smith, however, it might actually be true.

Smith's 10-year deal is worth $110 million and included a $10 million signing bonus. He is just 23. He turns 33 in the final year of this contract. Flozell Adams played at 33 in the first year of a six-year, $42 million extension he signed in 2008.

Right now, it certainly seems possible Smith will see the full $109,718,000 million.

"This might be the first 10-year deal I've ever done in football where I really think the guy will be playing in the last year of his contract," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "It's not something skewed one way or the other."

To me this was way more important than Dez's contract at this time.
