How to Fix the Cowboys D

There has been lots of talk about how awful the Cowboys defense is. Some (most) of it is merited, and some of it is not.

First of all, can anybody name me another team in the NFL that has all these things to contend with this season?
1) Switched defensive coordinators
2) Switched schemes from a 3-4 to a 4-3
3) Had 2 or 3 of its starting DL go on IR along with 2 backups
4) Is missing a starting CB, starting S, and (at least) 1 starting LB at all times?

Give the defense some credit. On paper, they are horrible, but it's not like they're a full-fledged starting squad that's supposed to be fully integrated into its scheme.

I think that in order to fix this defense - aside from getting healthy and having the standard amount of time to get acclimated to the scheme - we should look at the Seattle Seahawks and mirror them.

They use a 4-3 base scheme that utilizes press/man coverage. They play physical, and they have tailored their scheme to fit their personnel, which is exactly what we need to do.

We have CBs that don't play well in zone, and the zone especially doesn't work when we can't pass rush. When we're healthy and our pass rushers are effective, then we can play some zone, but the truth is that Carr, Claiborne, and Scandrick are press/man corners, and that's how we need to use them. It's a HUGE reason that our defense is so bad against the pass that we don't.

Also, their weak-side DE is not really a DE, he's a DE/OLB hybrid that they call the "LEO." Sound like anybody we have? To me, that sounds exactly like DeMarcus Ware, and if we're going to get the last couple years he has left out of him optimally, we should look at how the Seahawks utilize the LEO position. I think there is something to the fact that Ware has been so ineffective since the switch. OLs are just letting him blow right by them creating a nice pocket, and he rarely even sniffs the QB.

So, we basically need to be a classier, less loud-mouthed version of the Seahawks:

4-3 THAT UTILIZES MAN COVERAGE, a LEO, and very physical play will be what fixes the defense.

First let me say welcome to the realm:

You have some very good points, and the NFL is really a copycat league. But the Cowboys in constant transition for years need to have some stability.

I still feel our defense has a couple of great coaches, and maybe a few tricks still left to play.

Welcome aboard

Well written article, and I agree with most of it. I especially want to see the coaches and players have time to mesh.

I don't believe anybody can just learn a whole new  scheme in one season. Kiffin himself said he has taught them the basics but there is a lot left to learn.

JJ has had to many knee jerk reactions and this team needs some stability. Fans cry all the time about JJ doing this and doing that. When in fact he does listen to the fans to often IMO.

Howdy Beempty

I would never want us to have the Seahawks teach us anything: except how to smuggle a waxed ball on to the field.

With Kiffin and Marineli, I think these guys can get it turned around if given the time.

They have shaken up the defensive lineup for GB, so we'll see how the new starters do?

Hey Beempty

Great first post, appreciate when somebody actually thinks about what it is they want to say.

But Dallas has to draft a few more young guys next year, and stay in the scheme they have started.

but its still this year, and we have to come up with some answers real quick.

Just wanted to say Hi beempty

No comment on this till maybe next week

Even with all the injury issues, it is obvious that Kiffin was the wrong hire.

I am now calling for Garrett to be fired and ....

Wait of it......

Mike Zimmer to be hired as Dallas Cowboys Head Coach...the guy takes Cowboys trash and has never had a defense ranked below 15..

but...Jerry had to hire the fat azz Parcells and made one of his worst mistakes as an owner/gm..

So if we make the playoffs do you change your mind? I really doubt JJ fires anybody and starts over from scratch again. Well maybe Calahan could be a sacrificial lamb.

We have been beaten up by large receivers. We IMO have had good coverage, but these big guys have out jumped our cover guys. I sure don't know how you can fix that?

I guess if we could get some pressure on the QB, you would limit the amount of time WRers would have to go deep.

I guess we'll see how the Blitz works today. But we are not facing any tall WRers today, so coverage should be better anyway.

Plus GB will probably give us a steady dose of the run.

Its another wait until next year thing. I'm talking draft, hope we don't see any coach changes. But I will say, I think we could do a lot better than Callahan. But then the O-line would be screwed again, lets keep it the way it is.

WrongO Hawkster, Nelson is a big Tall WRer with more than a thousand yrds already. They will go to him often today.

I do think this aspect of Callahan is something a lot of fans may overlook.  Callahan has quietly transformed our offensive into very serviceable, and sometimes very good.  I don't think we need to get rid of Callahan for that reason alone. Stinks that our problem unit just shifted to the other side of the ball, but at least we seem to have gotten some stability on the OL.

The thing with Callahan, I believe...is if JJ has some kind of...I have to satisfy my blood thirsty fans, then Callahan would just be the sacrificial lamb.

We have gone way off topic, sorry beempty, but Callahan was a loser at Oakland and as a play caller not so good. I do believe Garrett is calling the plays again.

I don't want to see any coaching changes, but we all know JJ always has to do something stupid.

How can I add to this piece of brilliant thinking?
