Free has ankle surgury

Posted by Josh Alper on January 14, 2014, 7:10 AM EST

Right tackle Doug Free took a pay cut last offseason in order to remain with the Cowboys and turned in a rebound season after a dreadful 2012 campaign.

Free cut his penalties way down and was a more effective blocker than he’d been in the previous couple of seasons, giving the Cowboys a consistent output at both tackle spots for the first time in a few years. Now the Cowboys will have to hope that offseason ankle surgery doesn’t take anything away from Free’s future performance.

Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com reports that Free had a cleanup procedure on his right ankle shortly after the season. He’s expected to be ready for offseason work and is set to make $3.5 million for the second straight season, a number he earned in 2013 and one that should keep him around for the final year of his contract with the Cowboys.

Archer also reports that wide receiver Dwayne Harris had shoulder surgery. Harris had just nine catches during the regular season, but ranked among the top kickoff and punt returners in the league. He’s signed for $645,000 next season, which likely means he’ll be back returning kicks in Dallas.

At least Free is one guy still under contract next yr. He had a solid yr, and IMO he'll be better next yr.

Yeah it appears, we have tackles, but are guards are still real questionable.

Saw an update on the surgery, I guess no big deal, he'll be fine and ready to go next season.

Berny played solidly this year, which rather surprised me.  When healthy, Berny IS someone I can live with on the interior.  Leary, on the other hand, had a very streaky season, but this year's experience can only help him heading into next season.  I think our guard situation is pretty decent.  I'd like to get a decent developmental draft pick at the position in this year's draft, but I'm content with those two for now, personally.

I'm in agreement that they played better this year, partly because they are all learning Calahan's system. Leary has that degenerative knee problem, which could cause problems at any time.

But if you recall in the Wash. game the announcers kept commenting on Romo's ability to extend plays. That's because the defense was pouring in on Romo. Tony is still running for his life we need improvments. I'd like to see old man Tony be able to stand in the pocket. faroah

I predict right now the Cowboys draft a WRer or an OG 1st round.

This is a good prediction, there are maybe 5 quality 1st round DL guys. 3NT and 2 DEs. They will be long gone when we pick, and I think be move down at that point.

But I still think there might be a real shocker, maybe a big trade is in the works.

I know the Cowboys are highly interested in this particular OT, not sure what his name is will look it up and come back later. But he should be available to us at 16-17. The guy is simply a monster

Free stays healthy this year, he'll do good, and be gone next year. No way will the Cowboys pay him to stay around. They better draft his replacement this year. Word is Parnell will be cut, not sure about that one though.

I'm also sure this will be Free's last year, I'd be pissed after what they did. Free was outstanding in a one on one, they changed him to zone blocking and he had to learn it. Plus they kept moving him, yeah he'll be gone.
