Dez Bryant's new contract

Lets get this out in the open, is anybody except me concerned about this?

ARLINGTON – Dez Bryant believes he’s one of the NFL’s top wide receivers, and he’s ready to be paid like one.

Bryant has caught a league-leading 25 touchdown passes over the last two seasons and he’s entering the final year of a rookie contract.

“I feel like it goes for any player, if you put the work in, and if it’s deserving, it is what it is,” Bryant said Wednesday after a Reliant-sponsored charity home run derby at Globe Life Park. “I’m just going to sit back here and see what happens.”

Preliminary talks have begun between Bryant’s agent, Eugene Parker, and the Cowboys, however, Jerry Jones declined to discuss the subject following the draft earlier this month.

“We don’t get into details of contract negotiations,” Jones said. “That question, I don’t want it to imply that we’re not working on our contracts, but the fact that his is up is one I won’t be commenting on.”

Calvin Johnson became the league’s highest-paid wide receiver in March 2012 after Detroit gave him an eight-year extension worth up to $132 million with $60 million guaranteed. Johnson was 26 at the time.

A 27-year-old Larry Fitzgerald inked an eight-year, $120 million deal with Arizona in 2011. Chicago’s Brandon Marshall, 30, signed a three-year, $30 million extension last week.

Over the last two seasons, Bryant is sixth in receiving yards (2,615), seventh in receptions (185) and sixth in targets (298). Since Bryant entered the league in 2010, Johnson is the only wide receiver with more touchdown catches than Bryant’s 40.

If the Cowboys and Bryant, who turned 25 in November, don’t agree on an extension, they could elect to place him under the franchise tag.

How much would that cost? To give you an idea, the tag number for a wide receiver for the 2014 season is $12.3 million.

“As far as from the receiver standpoint, of course I feel like I’m one of the better receivers in this league,” Bryant said. “When it comes to that contract, I’m going to sit back and wait and see what happens.”

This really is an unavoidable question, and the fans will really be divided on this one.

My guess old fans VS. not so old fans.

Dez Bryant is a 50-50 guy or a catch 22. He has great qualities and not so great qualities. But of course that's my opinion.

If Garrett is truly going to stay on with the Cowboys, and run the show, IMO you need to trade the guy, and I'd do it now.

He's already expecting a contract extension, when we didn't give Tyron one.

To me its simple....there is no cap money to keep him around. I also fear when he's given all the millions he is seeking, there will be trouble.

This is beyond my accounting skills to figure out this one at the moment. But be assured, there will be volumes written about it before its over.

I see him wanting a long term deal for at least 100mil, since he believes he's the best there is.

Tyron Smith sure looks like one of the best, and he has said nothing. At the moment I have no real invested interest in this. I see some real talent on the offensive side, and I wouldn't compromise that to keep one player.
Desperado

Dez is maybe the one player on the team who has real worth. So do you trade him or go back to cap hell?
From what I see going on already at the OTA's, getting rid of him is being discussed.

He said he'd give a hometown discount, then he turns around and says he expects to be paid as a top 5 receiver. The stats prove he's one of the best, But Romo's stats prove he can throw to who ever is on the field.

Frankly not being a hey dude or Pepsi generation guy. I haven't much cared for his sideline displays. People like Romo are trying to look at pictures and listen to the coach. Having a guy ranting about being open doesn't really help the situation.

That's my 2 cents, whatever happens won't surprise. But going back into cap hell for one player makes no sense to me.

This is one of those things where we need everybody's input. Yet half the guys are not responding at all.

Last I heard Austins money will pay our rookies. So I need some real facts here to even try and make a decision.

Anybody interested in supplying them, Dez could really tear it up this year, but to keep him how many other players have to go.

I saw Bevo here earlier, and even he would not comment. Where's Zigo, MBC, MrM and others. This is a very controversial thing and I'd love to see what others think.

I think its simple, Dez has been hyped so much even he believes he's already in the Hall of Fame.

I'll be the first to say it, trade this guy, he's no Herschel Walker, but he has worth. But we need help in other places lets go get it.

Maybe our stat guy can change my mind....if he chimes in...but right now in my mind, I'm not going any deeper in debt with the cap.

Hey thxs for leaving me out lmao, at the moment for me its a wait and see. But what the hell, we could call each other stupid for at least 4-5 pages, like they do at other places.

Though he owes much to the Cowboys for helping him become a man, and consequently a Pro Bowler, he doesn’t owe them one dime of hometown discount. Football is a violent game, and players have a brief window in which to make a payday. To illustrate, Bryant has sustained injuries to his ribs, ankle, thigh, knee, groin, hip, finger, hand, foot, hamstring, back and wrist – and those are just the various maladies that made an official injury report.

I see no reason to do the deal now? They can do a deal in the off season and if that can't get done, he can be franchised.

If they had waited until Romo was a free agent and discovered the extent of his back injury, they could have saved millions.

Just saying it's time to make this a business.

I thought maybe Stephen is talking about a deal to keep Dez from pouting. After all 1.78 mil to his buddies Jordon and Woods that's chump change.

But isn't this the year Jordon owes him big money? He must realize the Cowboys are not going to give him 10 mil plus this year when they have no cap room left.

I think you are right, Dez has a big payday coming from Jordon.

He asked Jordon to withhold his money for one year on their deal till he proved he could stay out of trouble. (or something like that)  clown
