Cowlishaw: Why Tony Romo shouldn't be considered on par with ex-Cowboys QB Danny White

Columnist Tim Cowlishaw answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Question: The Cowboys will probably use some of their 11 draft picks to move around in the draft. Realistically though, how many rookies can they add to their roster and not be in "rebuilding" mode?

Tim Cowlishaw: In today's NFL, good teams add a lot of rookies each year. We are far removed from the days of 1975 when the Cowboys were a surprise Super Bowl team with their "Dirty Dozen" because they had a dozen rookies on team. With expanded rosters and free agency, there's no reason 8 or 9 of Cowboys draft picks shouldn't make team and you'd like to think at least two are starters and three or four more are contributors.

Question: How do you think the players will react to playing for a lame duck coach this season?

Tim Cowlishaw: Assume you are talking about the Cowboys. I think it makes very little difference in the NFL unless the particular coach is so disconnected from some players (say Tampa Bay's former coach Greg Schiano) that players are waiting for him to go. That's not the case with Garrett. Honestly, I don't think players think about this stuff nearly as much as fans (and media members do).

Question: What is your take on the Garrett changing his mindset this season and actually running a balanced offense, ie. rushing/passing?

Tim Cowlishaw: I think Garrett has always believed that's the right way to go but he has harbored doubts either about the offensive line or Murray's health or the team's ability to attack that way. I think it could happen as strong as Murray was at the finish of 2013. We'll see if Linehan goes back into his Steven Jackson mode or stays with his Detroit-Stafford throw 600 passes approach.

Question: Tony Romo's individual numbers are much better, but if his teams continue down this .500 trend for the end of his career, do you think Romo's reputation will be on par with Danny White's when he is judged by history?

Tim Cowlishaw: Why would he be on par with Danny White? Danny had very limited time as starter (Romo has just about reached it already), and got the Cowboys to three NFC title games. How's that comparable? White came up short on Super Bowls. Romo has one playoff win in seven years. When White was the QB here (I covered the team as beat writer at the end of that), if the team didn't at least get to the NFC championship game the season was a failure.

i see the point  now ...

a play here an there an white goes to 2 or three Super Bowls.

though i think he has been cheated since bill left ... what has romo done.

a ggod coach after bill left and romo is a better qb ... not that he isnot now.

garrett i believe is just not a head coach . maybe one of these that will always be a good assistant .

   just my thoughts

First of all the Cowboys have always been blessed with good QB's. none will ever be better than Roger or Danny as far as being a great athlete goes. JJ kept way to many guys out of his ring of Honor, but Danny sure as hell belongs there.

I should mention MBC, that White only played for Landry and not fatcells.

Danny White will  always get my vote, nobody ever tried has hard as him and Roger!

I don't know, Danny, Montana ,Fouts, Moreno, who was the best, I guess they say Montans. Maybe he just had the best team, because he wasn't the best QB!
