Cowboys 2014 Picks....Discussion

Zack Martin....BPA....I am glad to see more protection for Romo

IRVING — If anyone needs proof that it’s no longer business as usual at Valley Ranch, Exhibit A came in the first round Thursday night.

If anyone believes the Cowboys will never work the draft the way it should because owner Jerry Jones cherishes the sizzle over the steak, the argument just became more difficult to make.

On the clock at No. 16, with the phenomenon of Johnny Manziel staring him in the face, Jones resisted temptation. The Cowboys went with a much more pedestrian, but sound, pick in offensive lineman Zack Martin out of Notre Dame.

“We don’t see him as a safe player,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We see him as a damn good football player.”

The pick was not a slight of the Texas A&M star and what he could become, even though Jones said, “We didn’t spend a lot of time in this draft considering Manziel.” It was an endorsement of what the team has in quarterback Tony Romo and an acknowledgment of the realities of his contract going forward.

The Cowboys came to a fork in the road and chose their path last year when they signed Romo to a six-year, $108 million extension. They have gone too far down that road — with the financial implications of changing now too great — to alter course.

“I think that Tony has everything to do with this decision,” Jones said. “We have a big commitment to Tony. We feel that anything we look at with quarterback would be down the road, in the future with a quarterback.

“There is no way any quarterback comes in here and beats out Tony Romo. We know that. The fact Martin was there mitigated any consideration or any thinking about going with Johnny.”

The club targeted four players at No. 16 heading into the evening: defensive end Anthony Barr, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, outside linebacker Ryan Shazier and Martin.

Barr went off the board first to Minnesota at No. 9. Donald was next four picks later to St. Louis. When Chicago took cornerback Kyle Fuller at No. 14, the Cowboys were assured of landing one of their targets.

When Pittsburgh took Shazier, the choice was clear. The Cowboys did spend the first eight to nine minutes of their time exploring offers to trade back. Nothing turned their head.

Since the club had determined the interior of the offensive line was its biggest area of need after the defensive line, the selection of Martin resulted in plenty of fist pumps in the war room.

Martin will now be known for the rests of his career as the player the Cowboys took instead of Manziel.

“That’s fine by me,” he said. “I can live up to that.”

Greg Ellis may have made a similar claim 16 years ago when the Cowboys took him instead of Randy Moss.

Martin played left tackle at Notre Dame but has the position flexibility to play all across the offensive line. Chances are he will step in from Day One and start at guard.

Garrett declined to say which side Martin would work on, the left or right side to start.

“Whatever they are looking for me to play or help the team is what I am willing to do,” Martin said.

This is the fourth draft Garrett has presided over as head coach. The Cowboys have taken an offensive linemen in the first round three times. Jones had never done that before Garrett.

Does anyone doubt his influence with Jones?

“We believe that the game of football is won up front,” Garrett said. “You need to build the infrastructure of your team.

“It’s important to be disciplined. We want to address need [defensive line], but we want to address all of our needs with the best available player.”

Thursday night isn’t the first example of a change of approach on the part of Jones. He began this off-season by making the difficult decision to part ways with defensive end DeMarcus Ware. Now, he has stayed put in the first round for only the sixth time in 26 drafts.

And he did it to take a guard over a quarterback.

“Flair, flash, show business was never a consideration here,” Jones said.

How can you not believe him now?

Garrett says Martin's addition so valuable, it's even going to help the Cowboys' defense

Coach Jason Garrett is so enamored of Zack Martin, he said the Notre Dame tackle will even improve the defense.

“We’re going to be a better offensive line, a better offense, and we’ll probably play better on defense – the better we play on the offensive line,” Garrett said after the first round of the draft Thursday night at Valley Ranch. “We’ll be able to run the football better, control the game a little bit more.”

Garrett remembers that the Cowboys of the ‘90s won their championships behind a strong offensive line.

“We believe that games in the National Football League are won up front,” Garrett said. “The best teams now and for a lot of years were able to control the line of scrimmage on the offensive side of the ball. We did that here when we won championships in the ‘90s. You need to build the infrastructure of your team. We got a great start on that by drafting Tyron Smith. Added to that last year by drafting Travis Frederick. We feel like Zack Martin is in the mold of those kinds of guys.”

Garrett said the Cowboys will let Martin compete right away, although they’ll start him out at guard instead of tackle.

“He’s played a lot of snaps at a high level, so we feel like he’s a guy who mentally can handle it. Athletically, he can handle it,” Garrett said. “We’re going to put him in, mix him into the competition we have up front.”

I believe this was a solid pick, no complaints here

Loved the pick, now lets get that running game going big time.

2nd round we should get another blue chipper, a lot of the guys we need are still available.

The good news: All of their defensive end targets other than Anthony Barr are still available. Now, with so many still available, it appears that they might not have to chase long.  Boise State's Demarcus Lawrence is the favorite from among the gaggle of second-round DEs; the fact that Kony Ealy and Scott Crichton, and perhaps even Kareem Martin are still around increases the chance that Lawrence falls to Dallas, who have the fourteenth pick in round two.  I don't think the Cowboys trading up a few picks to get the guy they really want is out of the question.

The other possible direction is to grab a defensive tackle; Timmy Jernigan, Louis Nix, Stephen Tuitt (who I hear the Cowboys consider a DT), and Ra'Shede Hegeman all sit atop the lists of best remaining

I was watching the War Room Cam, which is linked to 105.3 the Fan radio station.

When the Martin pick was made, the room was dead, except for the scouts, who were ecstatic. I like it when the scouts are ecstatic.

JJ and JG were expecting a lot of action from the other teams. With JF still not drafted, but the deals never came. I heard they waited 9min. hoping for some kind of good offer.

Martin was a good value pick, he had been slated to go in the top 12. The guy is a road grader and our running should improve.
Nightrider

Cry me a river, Lonestar was right, we traded up to get a pass rusher. An gee some of the experts had him rated higher than Clowney.

We will miss round 3, but what the hell, at least we aren't stuck with JF.

I love the pick.

Don't love the trade. But at the end our first two picks are starters.
Hawk

Again time will tell, I'm pissed right now they wasted round 3, totally screwed my draft picks. I've been right about stars we have passed on for years.

This year, I hope I'm wrong and JG is getting the players he needs.

Sorry this really smells of a JJ move and nobody else's. Losing that 3rd round pick is a patented JJ move. With all the talent still on the board I think this was a stupid move!
El Kabong

I think this was pure crap, has JJ written all over it. I'm still wasting my time watching the draft, when we don't have a pick!
BluenSilver4evr

Voice of reason here: Cowboys see this one as a pure steal. They had this guy on their board as a 1st rounder.

I know most guys thought at this point we would be grabbing a DE or DT, and saw us getting 2 quality guys in the 2nd and 3rd. Sorry, but we will have to settle for a grade A pass rusher and a DT in the 4th.

I see way to many people talking about the D-Line sucks, when in fact we haven't seem them play. Melton is a top 5-3tech in the NFL. Bass and Crawford were both injured last year. Hayden will be better this year, and if Spencer comes around you have some real good players on the D-Line. Lets not forget the FA's we also picked up.

We have 8 picks left lets enjoy what's left and see how the chips fall. I think the Cowboys will still find a way to get rid of some of the round 7 picks (3) of them and move up. But as it stands we have literally a stable of D-linemen in Dallas already. Its up to Marinelli to sort it all out.
Hawk

My list of who we could still get value with:

QB

Aaron Murray
Brett Smith

WR

Bruce Ellington
TJ Jones
Jared Abbrederis
Mike Davis

OL

David Yankey
Dakota Dozier
Cyril Richardson

DL

Kelcy Quarles
Caraun Reid
Daquan Jones
Aaron Lynch
Jackson Jeffcoat

LB

Christian Jones
Telvin Smith

I still like Jeffcoat, hope we can get him. But seriously are any of the DT's or DE's left better than the guys we already have?
LoneStar

So far I think we have an A draft, but we need to score a starter with our 4th pick (good luck on that one). Maybe Garrett has something going on we don't know about. But I'll be damned if I can figure out what it might be?

Oh, I think you left out Selvie, but what the hell I've been preaching this the whole off season.

OLB

@calexmendez 1m
Hitchens led Hawkeyes in tackles, was defensive MVP in 2013.

This was the only thing I find good about this guy, most think he's a jag.
LoneStar

This is why Marinelli is in charge and not me, like Shenia said "that don't impress me much"
Hawk

Well maybe God told McClay this guy will be a great player, I'm waiting for Bevo to show up and tell me how great this guy is?
Nightrider

Now that the Cowboys wasted their 4th round pick, I'm done seeya later.
BluenSilver4evr

Well maybe we need to stop worrying about what the media thinks.

For those who think Dallas just completely did something out of left field, it's important to note that this isn't the first media declared "7th/undrafted" player to be taken in the 4th round so far. Not even close.

Patriots took C Bryan Stork of Florida State at 105, trading up to do it. NFL.com and CBS Draft Scout had Stork as a 7th-F

Rams took SS Maurice Alexander of Utah State at 110. NFL.com had him as 5th, but CBS had him as a 7th-FA.

I'm pretty sure Bill Belichick and Jeff Fisher aren't clueless to how the draft works.

Also
Jets WR Jalen Saudners at 104, was rated 6th rounder by NFL and 6-7 by NFL.com
Seahawks DE Cassius Marsh at 108, was 6th-7th on CBS and 5th-6th on NFL.

Not draft related but Stephan Jones said today the team would be open to bringing back Miles Austin..

just saying..

In the fourth round, the Cowboys picked Iowa linebacker Anthony Hitchens, followed by Pitt wide receiver Devin Street in the fifth round. Without a sixth-rounder, the Cowboys waited around until the seventh when they loaded up on more defensive help, picking Stanford lineman Ben Gardner, Texas Tech linebacker Will Smith, Baylor safety Ahmad Dixon, Northern Illinois defensive tackle Ken Bishop and Oregon cornerback Terrance Mitchell.

Defense was certainly a major theme all weekend, but more specifically the defensive line, where the Cowboys picked up three players. They also agreed to terms with undrafted free agent Chris Whaley of Texas, although previous injury issues will likely keep him from contributing right away.

“I think that’s a pretty good common denominator here. The obvious is the obvious,” Jerry Jones said on Saturday night. “We were trying to emphasize defense in terms of numbers. We think that one of the ways to mitigate some of the big challenge that we have in our defensive front is numbers. Actual numbers on the field. That was the strategy going in. We did not think we could solve this problem on the defensive line with the drafting of one pass rusher. We needed to have enough numbers.”

In fact, Jones said there could be as many as 16 defensive linemen on the roster after the Cowboys finalize their rookie free agent deals on Sunday and Monday.

After our 1st 2 picks, I see nothing here to get excited about, maybe a couple of new practice squad guys. I feel right now this is the worst draft since 2009. But maybe I'll change my mind tomorrow.

Would be a good move if Miles could stay healthy, but the NFL Network reported that there were teams interested in talking with him now that the draft is over.

HA HA....everybody knows Miles is my guy, he's the best overall receiver, complete package the Cowboys had. Oh yeah it was me pointed out some time ago, that the Cowboys could have a secret deal with Miles.

My question for Bevo? Was there any guys drafted from Texas? (the longhorns) I do have to say ,I wanted Jeffcoat but he went UDFA to Seattle. That's pure BS.
Nightrider

Sorry....................................There's no crying in football..................Thank God we didn't draft one of those cry babies.

I don't care if the kiss made you uncomfortable or not. We've seen plenty of straight players kiss their girlfriends when they're drafted over the years. It's 2014, get over it.

Bevo big sloppy kiss coming your way lmao

S&I gave us a B- for our draft, maybe that makes me feel a little better.

Bevo, I've kissed a few of those in my time lmao, I know the Oliver guy (internet only) biggest *** I've ever talked with. His site is the only place where the mods even quit. Thank God this is an invite only place.
El Kabong

It shouldn't matter that he is gay.

But the media attention it brought and the whole drama of yesterday was over the top and pretty offensive.  If they had continued to show a hetero male sucking face for 15 seconds and licking cake off his girlfriends face I would have been offended and wondered what the flip was going on.

It's football, get over it.  I wish this would end the BS but it won't.  And heaven forbid he get cut.  Way too much press over a guy that likely has about a 10% chance of sticking.

Just cut this guy, and let the Rams suffer the onslaught, lmao

Don't need anymore drama in Dallas. Big kissy Bevo

One thing I've looked at, these guys that were drafted are not Garretts RKGs. They are a mean bunch.

lawrence was suspended 3 times, no comment by his coach. Dixon was suspended for his play on the field. This bunch we drafted are a nasty bunch of players. Even Martin wants you down and out, so maybe in the end we will see a different bunch of Cowboys.

Good points but I would argue this somewhat. The Cowboys drafted 4 guys that were captains on their team. That smells of JG's RKGs all the way.

Okay you got me on that one, but lets wait for Bevo's take on how this was a McClay draft flower
BevoMav

I think it was a Marinelli draft? He is one tough SOB and he wants those kind of players.

All McClay did was put the board together. He had no input on who goes where.

Still don't really get the 4th round pick when we just passed on so many good players still on the board. Fisher claims he is the back-up for Lee, and we will probably need him.

I have read several articles, about off field problems with some of the guys we drafted. But nobody has said what these problems are. Is Calvin Hill still on the payroll, or I quess we could bring back Dez's baby sitters.

Looks to me like the end of the JG RKG, even though they passed on Jernigan. (Real stupid IMO)

Okay, slap me, this guy is really sucking people in (haha). He's going to make millions when he writes his book. He'll be cut and the Rams will really suffer when the book is written, I can see the signs outside of their stadium now.
