Bryant's Contract Offer

Dez Bryant is scheduled to reach free agency after the 2014 season, but the Dallas Cowboys are hesitant to give the wide receiver the huge contract that his play would usually dictate. Instead, the team has "a genuine concern" stemming from multiple off-field incidents, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport says the Cowboys "do not trust" Bryant off the field and fear that a large contact would blow up in the face of the team. The Cowboys have instead made contract offers to Bryant that don't feature much guaranteed money and protect the team if things ever go south.

The best offer from the Cowboys was reportedly a 10-year deal worth $114 million that featured just $20 million guaranteed and a $5 million signing bonus. Also, considering the high amount of years, the deal would pay Bryant an average of just $11.4 million per year and give the Cowboys a decent amount of freedom to cut ties with the receiver at any time.

For comparison, Calvin Johnson received an eight-year, $150.5 million deal from the Detroit Lions in 2012 with $60 million guaranteed and a $16 million signing bonus. That's a lot of money for the Cowboys to pin on the hopes that Bryant's struggles off the field don't continue. Rapoport detailed those struggles on Sunday morning on NFL Network:

"I went to the DeSoto (Texas) City Police Department. I found six instances of police coming to Dez Bryant's house -- that's where he lives, in DeSoto. Among the incidents -- and none of these were convictions -- there was a harassment incident, there was a robbery at his house, the fire department had to come and unlock his car that had a sleeping baby inside.

All of these things give the Cowboys cause for concern. He's had anger management; they have a manager with him at all times. But they are very nervous, and this is one reason they have not wanted to give him the guaranteed money that most elite receivers get."

For all the struggles off the field, Bryant's play has been nothing short of elite on the field. He racked up 2,615 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns in the last two seasons combined and is on pace for a third-straight 1,000-yard season in 2014. Through nine games, Bryant has 635 yards and six touchdown receptions.

This is what I think will happen

Jerry Jones said today that the team has made several contract offers to Dez and if they were concerned they would not have.

If the point is to lose Dez, then by all means, Franchise him. It will end badly and remember you heard it here first.

I belive letting Dez go would be the worst possible thing Jerry has done and he's done a lot of bad things.

A lot of people are very emotional when conversation is about Bryant. When Bryant talks about top 3....top 5....I ask which of these top guys have led their teams to a SB?

He wants Romo money, when others are calling for Romo to take a pay cut already. With the list of FA's being very long, JJ should not blow up this team to keep Bryant.

When you can let class acts like Ware and Austin walk. Just how much do you go out of your way to keep the class clown?

Oh the contract will now be decided in the media: Sure, great, lets get the distractions started now.

I think it comes down to image, what does JJ and JG want to promote. Landry would never put up with this guy on his sideline. Dwayne Thomas, Hollywood Henderson, Butch Johnson. The Cowboys didn't want these types representing their brand.

If JJ gives JG a new contract before Bryant, then we'll see what is really going on. JG says that an RKG is somebody who wants to win. Bryant seems to really fit that mold.

I'd love to see what the Cowboys have spent baby sitting this guy all these years. I'll be honest, and maybe way wrong. But I think this guy will run wild if he gets all the money he is asking for. 50mil guaranteed means he would be able to do what ever he wants.

We are not privy to what his baby sitters are reporting. We don't have a clue what's going on with his anger management program. I think all this is way beyond the normal persons perspective, and the media's.

One thing is for sure, Bryant took this to the media, and they will do their best to turn this into a media feeding frenzy. Not real sure coaches and the Brass really will forgive this. Seems to be real bad timing on Dez's part.

Ware left but for more money from Denver than he was worth.  Austin may be a class act but he only has 250 yards and one td.

Dez is a key to the Cowboys passing game and if he hits free agency he will become the highest paid WR in the NFL.  Oh and the class clown is on pace for 1300 yards and 13 touchdown. He is as elite as it gets.

This whole thing makes me laugh, are you a Dez Fan or a Cowboys fan.

JJ has handed out a ton of big contracts that bit him in the *** later. Then everybody said what a bad GM he is. Now that we are going to be out of cap hell, because of some tough decisions. People would like us right back there again. Our list of free agents is a mile long. Team players who know are system, I'd not sacrifice these guys for Dez. Plus sorry, Romo has had the ability to make average WRers look great.

Now everybody has completely forgotten that Dez has had some back trouble himself. I like what the Cowboys are still building, would miss him but over the years I've learned to miss a lot of players. I'm loyal to the Cowboys, but show me the money LMAO.

I think Austin has almost 400 yrds an 2 TDs. But the Browns spread the ball around way more than the Cowboys.

The whole Dez thing is just depressing, its a bummer.

bryant is looking to become one of the highest-paid receivers in nfl history.

bryant is on track for his third straight season with at least 90 receptions, 1,200 receiving yards and 12 touchdown receptions. as the 24th overall pick in the 2010 nfl draft, he signed a five-year, $11,810,500 deal (with $8.625 million guaranteed). his salary is $2.03 million this year, the final year of his rookie contract. bryant ended contract negotiations at the start of the regular season when the cowboys werenít willing to make him one of the nflís top paid wide receivers because of off-the-field concerns. according to nfl mediaís ian rapoport, dallasí best offer was $114 million for 10 years with $20 million in guarantees, of which $5 million was a signing bonus. the offer averaged $10 million per year over the first six years.

Cowboys, Dez Bryant move toward key decisions

Posted by Mike Florio on December 15, 2014, 12:43 AM EST
After two more regular-season games, plus whatever playoff games for which the Cowboys qualify, receiver Dez Bryant will complete his rookie contract and shed the risk of injury.  At that point, the Cowboys will have to decide whether to sign Bryant to a new deal, to apply the one-year franchise tag, or to let Bryant hit the open market.

Currently, itís not clear what will happen.  Bryant has resisted the teamís desire to sign him to a Texas-sized long-term deal, the kind that binds him to the team for the next decade but that allows the team to pull the plug whenever it chooses.  Thereís no reason to believe that the Cowboys have offered a contract with a structure that Bryant would prefer, and itís not known whether the Cowboys would devote eight figures in cap space to keep Bryant for 2015.

For the team, itís a complex stew of issues influenced by cash, cap space, and the available alternatives.  With so many young receivers playing well in 2014, the Cowboys may decide to roll the dice in the draft, picking Bryantís potential replacement in one of the first couple of rounds.  If Bryant refuses to do a deal on the teamís terms, that may be the only viable alternative to giving Bryant more money than the team is comfortable paying him.

Someone else will be comfortable paying him; with six catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday night, his value barring something unusual or unforeseen will be significant, if/when heís available to go to the highest bidder.

Jerry said today on 105.3 that Bryant isn't going anywhere. If they can't reach an agreement he'll get the franchise tag.

It kills me that the owner and Bryant just can't let this go until the season ends. Both of them need to shut up and lets play football.
